Arunachal Pradesh, the “Land of the Rising Sun,” offers a mix of high-altitude passes, serene monasteries, and tribal heritage. This itinerary highlights the journey to Tawang, though it is best suited for those already starting from nearby hubs like Bomdila or Dirang due to the vast travel distances.
Morning: Depart from Dirang early. Stop at the majestic Sela Pass (13,700 ft), the gateway to Tawang, and visit the crystal-clear Sela Lake.
Afternoon: Pay respects at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial, dedicated to the 1962 Indo-China war hero.
Evening: Arrive in Tawang and check into your hotel. Visit the Tawang War Memorial for a moving light and sound show.
Night: Overnight stay in Tawang.
Morning: Visit the Tawang Monastery, the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. Explore its museum and prayer halls.
Afternoon: Drive to Bum La Pass (Indo-China border) and the stunning Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar Lake), formed after an earthquake. Note: Special permits are required for this area.
Evening: Visit the Ani Gompa (Nunnery) or stroll through the local Tawang market for handmade carpets and wooden crafts.
Night: Overnight stay in Tawang.
Morning: Visit the spectacular Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls), a 100-meter drop that is one of the most beautiful in India.
Afternoon: Begin your descent back toward Bomdila or Guwahati.
Evening: Transfer to your departure point or stay overnight in Bomdila to break the journey.
